EMS Transfer of Care Times

November 9, 2022 | Contact: Dr. Timothy Chizmar, State EMS Medical Director

Transfer of Care from EMS to Hospital Staff

MIEMSS continues to closely monitor EMS prehospital care-to-hospital transfer times and sends weekly reports to 34 hospitals and freestanding emergency departments across Maryland. These reports are received by all Region III hospitals and many in Regions IV and V.  Hospitals use this data to re-evaluate their triage processes and prioritize improvement in transfer times.

We encourage leaders to maintain ongoing collaborative discussions with hospitals for efficiently transferring care from EMS to hospital staff. The Direct to Triage Protocol enables the delivery of stable patients to the ED triage waiting area. It's important to remember that when using this protocol, the patient report must be provided to nursing staff.
