According to Maryland EMS standards, it is essential that all seriously ill and injured patients are promptly transported to the nearest appropriate facility. Maryland is home to 48 hospital emergency departments. For patients needing specialized care, Maryland features 9 designated trauma centers along with a variety of specialty referral centers, such as those for burns, cardiac conditions, spinal cord injuries, pediatrics, eye injuries, hand/upper extremity injuries, hyperbaric treatment, neurotrauma, perinatal care, and stroke (both primary and comprehensive centers). Maryland's Trauma and EMS System ensures that patients are transported to the most suitable facility to receive optimal care, guided by the Statewide Medical Protocols for EMS clinicians.
